Cargo Quality, Cleanliness and Damage Surveys

Pre-shipment, cleanliness and damage surveys establishing the condition of cargo and the spaces carrying it.

  • Pre-Shipment
  • Tank Cleaning
  • Hold Cleaning
  • Cargo Damage
  • Cargo Insurance

Overview

Most cargo disputes turn on condition at a specific moment: before loading, on completion of cleaning, or at the point damage was discovered. Establishing that condition properly at the time is far cheaper than reconstructing it afterwards.

We attend for owners, charterers, cargo interests and insurers, with a documented method and a photographic record that supports the finding.

Scope of work

  • Confirmation of the applicable cleanliness or quality standard
  • Inspection of holds, tanks, hatch covers and access arrangements
  • Assessment of previous cargo residue, coatings and odour where relevant
  • Wall wash and sampling where the cargo requires it
  • Cargo condition, packing and marking assessment
  • Damage extent, location and photographic record
  • Ambient and weather conditions during operations
  • Report with method, findings, photographs and any recommendations

Frequently asked

What standard is hold cleanliness assessed against?
The standard required by the intended cargo and the charter party, such as grain clean or hospital clean, is confirmed before attendance.
Do you carry out wall wash tests?
Where the cargo requires it and the arrangements permit, with the method and results stated in the report.
Can you quantify damage?
We record extent and, where instructed and reasonably determinable, quantify affected cargo. Valuation is a separate matter for the adjuster.
Do you determine cause?
We report probable cause where the evidence reasonably supports it, and say so plainly when it does not.
