Overview

A newbuilding is decided long before steel is cut. Specification wording, yard selection and the quality of the site team determine what the owner receives at delivery. Those decisions also shape the work needed during the guarantee period.

Maritime Expertise supports owners from feasibility and yard selection through design and specification review, site supervision, contract administration and delivery, and into post-delivery guarantee support.

Scope of work

  • Feasibility and outline specification support
  • Shipyard capability assessment and shortlisting
  • Technical specification and contract technical annex review
  • Design review through basic and detail design stages
  • Site team mobilisation and reporting structure
  • Inspection and test plan review and witness attendance
  • Progress reporting against milestones and payment stages
  • Crew phase-in planning and familiarisation
  • Sea trials, delivery and handover documentation

Frequently asked

At what stage should a consultant be appointed?
Before the specification is fixed. The most expensive newbuilding problems are created in the contract technical annex and are difficult to correct once the yard has priced them.
Do you provide a full site team?
We support selection and management of site personnel and can provide individual specialists. Team size is scoped against the vessel type and yard.
Do you replace the classification society?
No. Class verifies compliance with its rules; we represent the owner's commercial and technical interest, which is a different role.
What happens after delivery?
Guarantee defects are tracked, documented and pursued with the yard through the guarantee period, with a final settlement summary at the end.
Can you review an existing contract?
Yes. A technical review of an already-signed specification often identifies items that can still be clarified with the yard before construction reaches them.
